Voila: Here Is Your Golden Globes Open Thread
With a major red-carpet personnel change today!
Welcome back, Fellow Broads! We hope your holiday were both merry and bright, if you celebrate — and if not, that the past two weeks were fun and/or relaxing. We mostly hope everyone has rested up, because we’re entering Moira Rose’s favorite season:
Tonight, even though many of us also have football games we want to eyeball, the Golden Globes kick off the 2025 awards season.
This year, they’re being hosted by Nikki Glaser, who was funny to me all three times I’ve seen her: when she mercilessly roasted Tom Brady; when she popped up on Thursday Night Football a couple of weeks ago (as a guest, not, like, returning punts or something); and when she guest-starred on season seven of Selling Sunset as Chrishell’s client who mostly wanted to roast Chrishell’s ex/boss for having a super young new girlfriend rather than making a real estate investment1. She also wore a really cute sweater on Selling Sunset, so, needless to say, I am optimistic that she will do well tonight — or at least outdo Jo Koy. At the very least, I think she will be better prepared.
If you need to brush up on the nominees/whose outfit to anticipate on the red carpet, we ran that down at Go Fug Yourself last year; if you just need the cold, hard facts, the red carpet kicks off at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT on E!, and the show itself airs at 8 p.m ET/5 p.m. PT on CBS, and streaming on Paramount+. Interestingly, the E! press release noted that this iteration of Live From the Red Carpet is being hosted by Zuri Hall and Heather McMahan, with fashion coverage from Keltie Knight. Naturally, I tootled over to Laverne Cox’s Instagram to investigate her absence from the festivities, where she had posted the following statement:
With an incredible amount of gratitude I've decided not to return as host of #LiveFromE's red carpet coverage. I'm so incredibly proud of the work we did over my three year tenure. I'd like to express my sincere thanks to everyone at @nbcuniversal, @eentertainment and @denofthievestv for your incredible support. These moments are a reminder to me of what an incredible privilege it has been to talk to some of the world's greatest artists about their work, navigating the pressures of success, etc. I'm so excited to keep growing, evolving and exploring great opportunities as an actress, artist, host and speaker. I hope you'll all continue to go with me on my evolving journey. Tune into my new comedy series "Clean Slate" premiering on Amazon Prime February 6.
I think this is probably a good call on her part, if indeed it truly was her call. Laverne definitely improved over her tenure, and she always brought a positive vibe to the proceedings, but she’s a much better actress than she is a red carpet host and I think it’s great that she’s returning to her strengths. We all have a limited amount of time and energy, after all.
So welcome back, Broads! The bar is open. Let’s get right into this.
