The Best, the Worst, the Most and the Least from the 2024 Golden Globes
Which were, themselves, the worst and least!
The Golden Globes’s debut on CBS, and under the new ownership of Penske Media, could not have been more successful... at demonstrating what a bad awards show package looks like. The red-carpet pre-show was a mess. Hastily hired host Jo Koy bombed. The announcer bungled people’s names, and much of the presenter patter was poorly written, and dragged on longer than the time allotted for speeches. [Sidebar: Who thought it was a good idea to give Kevin Costner a mic, because that dude spoke at a pace of about three words per minute and felt very much like he had blown off rehearsal.1] The new lounge-like set design meant fewer people had good seats, and thus more of them had to trek for miles just to get their statues; that Beef theme song is NOT designed for a long march to the stage. In an amazing audio metaphor for how it all went, during Mark Hamill’s introduction of the new Cinematic Achievement category, you could hear a bunch of plates crash to the floor somewhere in the ballroom.
