Hi all! I've been dealing with my election anxiety and heeding Michelle Obama's directive to "just do something!" by participating in phone banking in battleground states. It's been really helpful, hopefully to the cause as well as to me! Go vote!
Thank you for your service! When Mrs. Obama told me to "do something," I decided to make election bracelets and give them out to friends, family, and strangers. I've made more than 350, and giving them to people gives me such a lovely jolt of serotonin every single time. I also organized a postcard to swing states party with my friends, and we sent out 200. Not a huge number, but that was all the postage I could afford.
I also participated in a number of postcard writing parties, geared particularly towards young, college-aged voters. Meanwhile, although my son is studying in India this semester--and voted early online from Dharamshala, India (where the Dalia Lama lives)--he has received 3 handwritten letters asking him to vote, mostly from Greensboro NC, which is where he usually attends college. It makes me cry every time I get one in our mailbox because I know that all of North Carolina is working hard to get the young people to vote, and that my efforts are not alone. We are one of those swing states, and I do feel like people have been doing everything they can to get all citizens to vote. Because each vote really does matter!
My husband and I received two postcards here outside Philly, we wrote them for Georgia back during the Warnock/Ossoff runoff election so I appreciate and thank you for all of the cramped hands and postage!
I phone banked and blockwalked here in Texas all last week. I’ve been doing this kind of thing for 30 years, so they always give me the neighborhoods with lots of cul-de-sacs, no sidewalks, and soooooo many stairs. At least I got my steps in, and the response was very positive! (It’s Austin, so I didn’t expect any pushback, but it’s still gratifying these days to actually talk to people.)
I participated in my first canvassing event this weekend in Wisconsin! Even if some of the houses were confusingly displaying both candidates signs, and it was cold and rainy, it was a great time overall. The people I did get to talk to were mostly receptive, ALMOST all of them were fully dressed, and I got to share some info they didn’t know. It did feel good to do something and also to hang with people who were really active and super nice. The volunteers in Wisconsin were just LOVELY.
And now I’m just going to shut off the news all day, which will be helped because I work until 9pm.
I’m nauseously optimistic for today, but trying to figure out how I’ll be ok if things go south. GFY got me through 2016 and I am grateful to you both for providing a smart, fun, thoughtful community of hope.
For the People SMA, my money is still on Joshua Jackson: cute, nostalgic, on a big network show right now, cozy and charismatic but not offputtingly so, and also probably a pretty easy get for the magazine. But I also cannot discount Travis Kelce working the greased pole of PR to Swiftian levels. He is extremely good at that and being one half of a grade A power couple certainly won't hurt his chances.
Now watch them give it to Dwayne Johnson again because he's promoting that weird Santa movie that cost over $200m.
100% it's going to be Dwayne. Cause what a boring choice!
I love love the Jonathon Bailey idea. Not saying all my FB reels are Bridgerton and he was even hotter in Fellow Travelers. And Wicked is absolutely everywhere. With that thought, will officially be angry with Dwayne (although happy with Pacey or Pedro. Travis won't give them the access they want cause they will want the lounging together at the pool photos).
Joshua Jackson would be a good pick! Denzel would be an excellent pick.
Glen Powell is still too much of a fresh face. Yeah, he's been steadily working for years and years and is on his way to become The leading man but he's still too new. Same for Elordi and Bailey and Butler. Paul Mescal or Pedro might go for the steal because they're got Gladiator 2 coming up though Mescal is a bit young.
Picking 69-year-old Denzel would be both amazing and justified. But I can also totally foresee a Gladiator 2 spread in the magazine with him, Pedro, Paul, etc. See also the Wicked guys.
I 100% think Powell would push for the cover because he's savvy and open about his ambition to be a megastar, but I agree that they tend to go more for established figures and I think he's still considered "rising." Wait a few years.
I see Gladiator II trailers every time I open Instagram, and Denzel Washington does not look 69. I guess I knew he was in his 60s, but seriously, does he have fountain of youth somewhere???
I’ve been guessing Powell since realizing it was SMA season, although I don’t know if he has any current projects. I waited for the “Hidden Figures” credits because I wanted to find out who had played John Glenn!
Before I even read on, I wanted to say THANK YOU! I will need the support later tonight. Also, there is a polling place right outside my window. The line to vote was 30 people deep when the polls opened at 6:00, and it's remained the steady and possibly gotten longer since then. When I saw it I almost burst into tears. I live in Chicago. I pretty confident which way my state will swing. But the voter apathy has been so disheartening in the past elections, seeing this turnout almost has me in tears. And I love watching my 5yo excitedly go to the window and check the line!
(I voted by mail a few weeks ago, thank goodness).
Also in Chicago, also very heartened by today's turnout! My husband and initially I walked over to our day-of polling place to drop off our mail ballots only to find out that it didn't have a drop box so we had to go to a different spot - and both locations had way more people than I remember seeing in any election since 2020!
My spouse is working at a polling location today (a poll manager! Ooh la la!) and we're in a fairly blue area in NYS so I'm not too (?) worried about him, but I've seen stories of some aggro behavior towards poll workers elsewhere and I'm JUST SO MAD at these asshats. We also tried to channel some of our anxiety the past few months by writing postcards to swing state voters, reminding them to make a plan to vote. Somewhere in there I also ran my second marathon and bested my previous time by 3+ minutes! At 50 frigging years old! (My tiny humblebrag!)
My almost 80 year old mother has worked elections since she retired. We are a vote by mail state so it's one big office with a lot of older ladies (some men) counting ballots. Last year she was called the c-word by some aggro who was convinced she was suppressing his vote and someone sent fentanyl and the place was evacuated.
I’ve lost 70 pounds this year and I can’t wait for my cunt of a mother to tell me I look good so I can say really? Because I weigh the exact same now as I did the first time you ever told me I was fat.
I wish I weighed what I did the first time my mom told me I looked fat.... hugs, and remember, moms can be bitches about such things. Celebrate you, you deserve it. That is an amazing accomplishment. I need to copy you!
I have to see a new doctor so I might ask. Back in 2003, we did diet changes and I lost a bunch only to gain it back. But the process to get it solved is better now I’m sure.
Congratulations on your weight loss....i know from personal experience how very hard it is! And I'm sorry about the messages you got from your mom...as I mom I talk to myself constantly about the messages, overt and subtle, that I send my daughter....so powerful. Be kind to yourself.
The past week of my life has been GREAT because I created a new holiday called HallowaliMuertos. It came about when I realized that Halloween was on October 31, the next day was both All Saints Day and the first day of Diwali, the day after that was Día de Los Muertos, and Diwali would continue until November 5--Election Day. Diwali is the Hindu Festival of Lights, celebrating the triumph of light over darkness. So to celebrate HallowaliMuertos, I created a community altar and asked people to send their positive prayers and intentions to add to the altar. This celebration has had me focusing only on the light and had no room for all the negativity and political nonsense that would otherwise be consuming me. You can read more on my blog at https://blissfullu.com/2024/10/30/celebrate-hallowalimuertos-with-me/
I love this so much! I think it's a good sign from the Universe that all these things are lining up to elect our first woman POTUS. It feels like good energy.
Exactly! I say in my blog that I'm not a big believer in coincidences, but I'm an absolute believer in the Jungian idea of synchronicity. For election day to fall on the last day (in the US) of India's biggest holiday, Diwali, the festival celebrating the triumph of the light--and just a couple of days after a Latinx/Hispanic holiday celebrating the ancestors--when our first female Black Caribbean/Indian Asian candidate is running? I can't believe there isn't some kind of positive message in that.
I just read your blog post, and the first Hindu goddess you mention is Lakshmi. I wrote elsewhere in this thread that a friend of mine has been canvassing in Pennsylvania. One of the people who was also there was Padma Lakshmi! She's been a very vocal Harris supporter.
I fully support this! I celebrated Mardi McValentine’s Day before leaving for basic training in Feb. 2004, and in 2020, when there was a full moon on Halloween and we turned the clocks back on the 1st, which was my grandma’s birthday, I tried to summon her. I think it worked! She definitely would have voted for Biden/Harris.
I know what you mean. My mother passed on almost 20 years ago, but I know she would have been the biggest Harris supporter, especially because she came from California. She was a good cook, but not a big baker because she didn't have a sweet tooth. But the one cookie I remember her cooking were Molasses Crinkles. So I think I'm going to bake some of those tonight in her honor.
You mentioned promotions, so I will share that I recently finally was promoted into the role that I've been functionally performing at for the last two years, with the pay to match, and a promise of quick further development towards the role above this one!
Also I recently went to the Huntington in LA again and that is such a top-tier gift shop. I almost left with about $300 worth of stuff (including a wristlet that looked like a tarot card!) but managed to remind myself of my suitcase limitations and only leave with a jar of their marmalade, made using oranges from their grounds! It's really good marmalade, too.
Also--that gift shop is my dream, but last time I visited, I didn't have much time to browse. I did buy some marmalade, though--glad to hear it's delicious! (We're going back on Friday--my son is in college near LA, and suggested we go back to the Huntington when we visit this weekend. Little worried about what might happen to my wallet with more time in the shop, but c'est la vie!)
So I had a kid at work ask me who I voted for (I declined to say because I always do until after Election Day) but the kiddo was telling me who their family supports and why. It’s always interesting to hear someone who is maybe voting against their own interests but to each their own.
I also met Susan Rice on Saturday night and it was maybe the first time I’ve been more hopeful about the results. Also she’s so smart.
As for small victories: I ran an online speech and debate tournament on Sunday with a raging migraine.
I know People does a separate Sports category, but the Dodgers deserve a collective nomination as Sexiest Team Alive, with a runner up nomination for my gritty Tigers, most of whom are under 30.
I’m trying my best to be a good ESC (emotional support Canadian) but I cannot cannot cannot understand how it’s this close! How? Did we not live through that last nightmare together? Watch the convictions? Have eyeballs?
Ok ok, back to being supportive and hand holding- what do you need from the Canucks?
I don't think it's as close as the mainstream media and corporate bullshit polling would want you to think. My network of women are FURIOUS at the orange menace, and my gut tells me he's going to lose in a historic landslide.
That is my thought/hope as well. I was shocked in 2016, but looking back, there was so much hatred for the Clintons. Decades of hatred. Misogyny and racism are definitely at play here, but I don't think it's the same (at least I effing hope so).
First, a huge percentage of people don't pay attention to the news or politics at all. For many, this is not their fault - they are working two jobs, barely keeping above water, trying to keep their kids fed.) So they are just voting for the party they always voted for, or believing the garbage that comes through ads and social media.
Second, every expert I know says that if we had two normal candidates, the Republican would win by a MILE. There are a bunch of reasons for this, but the only one I can remember is that when there is inflation, the president and the president's party gets destroyed in the next election. The only reason why it's so close is that Trump is a disaster of a candidate.
Third, the NYT showed some research on the emotions that Democratic and Republic voters feel. The point of the article was to show the vibe shift when Biden dropped out (Dems got way more hopeful). But what I noticed was that the predominant emotion for Republicans was anger (42%) and afraid (22%). That made me sad for them. It also explains why they want to burn it all down, or to find a strong man to save them.
Well done, mama. We always say that you can only be as happy as your least happy kid, and it's SO true. Always wonderful when they're doing well.
Ha ha, and that's why kid 3 wasn't mentioned. If you know you know.
*heart hands*

Same, Debbie and also for FL! 🙏
Another one here who wrote postcards!
My husband and I received two postcards here outside Philly, we wrote them for Georgia back during the Warnock/Ossoff runoff election so I appreciate and thank you for all of the cramped hands and postage!
You’re doing the right things! Thank you!!

This Wisconsinite thanks you!!
I made lots of calls to WI— the WisDems are incredibly organized!!
Thank you from wisconsin’s neighbor, Minnesota!
Thank you for your Governor and Lt Gov!
~From your Midwest neighbor in Illinois!
Our Governor “Dad” is the best and we really want him to be America’s “Dad.” (And Peggy Flanagan is amazing, too!)
Nice thing that happened for me today: Seeing a father and his daughter playing Go Fish on my commute to work. Really sweet.
Awww, I love that!
I’m nauseously optimistic for today, but trying to figure out how I’ll be ok if things go south. GFY got me through 2016 and I am grateful to you both for providing a smart, fun, thoughtful community of hope.
I'm going to steal "nauseously optimistic"!
I stole it myself! The mood of the day
This is the perfect description.
GFY and DWB are my emotional support websites.
Lots of love to you Americans today.

Can we also pause for a moment to give credit for GladIIator? That made me cackle.
Maybe Denzel next year after he finishes his Broadway run in Othello?
I’ve been guessing Powell since realizing it was SMA season, although I don’t know if he has any current projects. I waited for the “Hidden Figures” credits because I wanted to find out who had played John Glenn!
"Travis Kelce working the greased pole of PR to Swiftian levels" -- Kayleigh please, leave some crumbs for us when you eat like that!!!!

My dad’s the one who complains about mine and I always say that you all made choices about my food as a kid so please stop. Hugs to you!
I don't usually cuss out other people's mothers but I'm teetering on the precipice here!!!
Hugs back Roz & LaLa. And punches for your parents.
Thanks. When the problem is genetics and hormones, you can’t win.
That’s what I thought but I went the medical route and Wegovy has been a life changer. My relationship to food is much healthier now.

Sending you best wishes and sincere hopes that these a very very nice customers who buy a lot of stuff and give you big commissions
Congratulations!
Congratulations!!! And, thoughts and prayers today. I hope your customers are not jackholes -H
Congratulations on the promotion, Kate! Awesome!

Heather and Jessica,
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO! You brighten all my work days!

Oh good for you for pushing through a migraine, that is HARD. -H
As a long time sufferer I can manage but I don’t have to like it. And the sucker is still here today but less stabby.
Oof it’s raining here and I’m going to vote at lunch wearing an appropriate shirt so lfg
Also glen Powell would be a fab choice but they usually go old so I’m going with Ryan gosling
Like Ryan, I'm Canadian and born in 1980, so I gotta say, ouch.
Right? I'm laughing out loud. This is where Heather and Jessica might say "oh, you sweet summer child".
I know People does a separate Sports category, but the Dodgers deserve a collective nomination as Sexiest Team Alive, with a runner up nomination for my gritty Tigers, most of whom are under 30.
Except that this guy has been chosen for months the Dodgers are an excellent idea!
Shohei is a snack and I think the camera operators for the MLB think so also
SUCH a snack. He's like a golder retriever of a human, but also with a cute face and butt. (RESPECTFULLY)
The man is solid muscle. It's daunting.
I thought that in 2016, woke up to a gut punch.
People (men) were still amused by him and had a oh he can't be that bad! People thought he was good at business. Nope. Just born rich.
Also people hated the Clinton’s
Misogyny and racism aside don’t think its the same for Harris
That is my thought/hope as well. I was shocked in 2016, but looking back, there was so much hatred for the Clintons. Decades of hatred. Misogyny and racism are definitely at play here, but I don't think it's the same (at least I effing hope so).
Do people generally like Kamala? Even up here back then you could feel the hatred for Hillary but I thought it was misogyny hatred, period.
Asylum, if the wrong guy wins. Pretty please?
I’ll make lasagna.
That works for me!
polls are broken and frankly 4 year amnesia has hit.
We'll support you guys whenever Trudeau calls an election.
We don’t understand either!! Ketchup flavored chips please!
I got you.
