We Watched the Independent Spirit Awards So That You Don't Have To

Like the SAGs before it, this weekend the Independent Spirit Awards streamed on YouTube rather than its usual spot deep in your cable lineup (the Independent Film Channel, or IFC). Unlike the SAGs, though, host Hasan Minhaj made a lot of jokes about how they didn’t have any distribution this year, and how embarrassing the entire situation was. This was a bit histrionic. All things being equal, the SAGs being booted from TNT is bigger deal than the Indie Spirits not being shown on a tiny niche network most people probably forgot existed, no disrespect to IFC — although, as Minhaj pointed out, when even the channel devoted to your corner of the business decides the show isn’t worth airing, that seems like a pretty bad sign.
