I'm sorry I couldn't join you all last evening in the chat, but I ADORED that line from the Levys. EVERYONE knows it's not a comedy! And my goodness, "Fishes." I do like to think they did themselves in with that one. Didn't even submit an episode with some lightness. Went straight-up trauma.
I was watching baseball during much of this and then didn’t go back on the second view but I need to see SLR’s speech because yes. We teachers put up with your bad kids and don’t get anything for it.
Preach it! I haven’t taught public school in 11 years and can now not imagine going back. I have subbed some, and it just shows me it has gotten even harder. Thanks for hanging in there!!
I couldn't watch for very long last night, but it was a delight, as always, to chat with Broads while the show was live, and I am very happy for Lamorne! He also has the SNL movie coming out soon; he's one of many in it so he probably doesn't get a ton of screen time, but it's a very good moment for Winnie the Bish/Prank Sinatra! Here's hoping he has many more.
My comment from last night stands. Can you freaking IMAGINE beating Meryl and Carol Burnett (and SLR) for your first ever win? And then her speech was so great.
It reminds me of the year in the '90s when the son of one of my mother's best friends won (as a young man) for a role in a TV movie, where the other nominees were, if memory serves, Alan Alda, Richard Gere, Matthew Broderick, and Ian McKellan. Actors he had grown up watching and presumably revering.
I tuned in for one or two things with intent to watch more, but then got very annoyed when I saw Jon Stewart forget to include Dulce Sloan as a named cohost. I mean, if they want to continue to devalue Black correspondents/cohosts, I hope they are prepared to lose her like they lost Roy Wood, Jr. (I REALLY hope it’s noted in the next episode w a big apology. Bc it looked like she noticed and was unhappy).
I did love seeing Lamorne Morris win his Emmy and give just the best speech. I met him once and was able to compliment Winston as my favorite character on New Girl so I will take his win as my own. Bc unlike his daughter, I always believed in him. 😂
I also noticed the oversight of Dulce and her reaction. My mind went to Roy, and I think Wyatt Cenac had some not great things to say when he left the show. I am really hoping it was a sincere mistake, because all the others were standing on one side and in the flurry of the moment Jon just rattled off those he could see. It looked like Jon talked to her first after leaving the mic, so hopefully that was an apology and he will address on the next show.
Yeah, I have not actually particularly enjoyed what I've seen of his return to the desk. He seems to still be using a 2003-2010 playbook for things that require some reassessment of his priors.
So I just watched Greg Berlanti’s beautiful speech. To quote EHG (and TWoP)’s Sarah D Bunting: “DAMN YOU BERLANTI!!!” I shouldn’t be in tears already today.
I’m rewatching Everwood right now, and every time I watch the show, I go back and find the archive of TWoP recaps. They make me cry as much as the show. Damn you, Berlanti, and also Damn you, TWoP.
I loved that they used the Everwood theme as the music to play him up to the stage too. Especially given Treat's recent passing, that definitely made me a little verklempt.
I think they married quietly earlier this summer. Last year on Graham Norton, he talked about the holiday village he puts up in his house every Christmas and how involved it is. Now all I can think about in regard to them as a couple is Saoirse helping to construct this elaborate toy village and coming up with new ideas to help it grow. It's a sweet vision actually.
that's very sweet and also feels like something who has been in wes anderson films probably has familiarity with (this is how i imagine wes anderson's sets. little dolls of owen wilson everywhere)
I was really struck by how few political (or even politically adjacent) comments there were, save one very memorable meow. Do we think that was an edict or strongly worded suggestion?
I am happy that the Bear didn't get Best Comedy, but sad that the winner was not Reservation Dogs. I knew it was very unlikely, but a girl can dream of a better world.
I truly hope this makes the Bear creatives think long and hard about what category they submit Season 3 under. Because this season - even more so than the first two - is absolutely not a comedy - at all. I still think they would win awards (since Succession isn't there anymore) and it would reduce the backlash that I think happened with this year's awards. I love the Bear - but place it in the correct category. And Yay - again - for Hacks!! This season was incredible in every way! And special kudos to Paul W. Downs for his note about there being barely any characters over the age of 60 in television. I'm not at that age bracket yet - but I'm close and completely agree with his assessment.
Yes, all this. I know everyone is sick of my saying the Bear is NOT a comedy, and I too am happy Hacks won. The writing and acting are so good. But what's funny to me, actually, is I don't consider Hacks a comedy either. I mean, I know it's ABOUT comedians, and the writing is really sharp, but I'm not laughing through episodes of Hacks. I'll say what I've said about the Bear - compare it to something like Abbott or Ted Lasso, and you know it's a very different type of show...
Have we established that that's true? With streaming, episodes of anything don't have to be a set number of minutes (even The Bear weren't all 30 min - there were some 40s in there), and I don't think there's a minimum number of minutes a show has to be to be considered a drama?
I'd always read that there was, though maybe that was just SAG/WGA/DGA union contracting language rather than the Emmys.
This seems to be the pertinent bit from the rules, which is pretty opaque:
"3a. Where there is a program that is eligible for placement in more than one category, the producer has discretion (excluding nonfiction/reality programs) with the final approval of the Industry Panel to enter the program and its individual achievements in any category where they are eligible. The placement of a program automatically directs the placement of all individual achievement entries, e.g., if a program is placed in comedy series, performers must follow in comedy series categories (or, where there is no such direct correspondence, the most appropriate category, unless otherwise noted)."
"We have to think that, at some point, many Emmy voters paused “Fishes,” the episode of The Bear where everyone had a breakdown at Christmas, and angrily snapped, 'I’m having A PANIC ATTACK, I’m not voting for this!' "
I'm an Emmy voter (Art Directors Peer Group) and this is 100% what happened.
I keep thinking that Meryl Streep finally announcing her separation from her husband after such a long time of keeping silent about it, was so she and Martin Short could eventually make their relationship public. I hope so, anyway! I’m so invested in these two!
Such a fun Emmys show and my only disappointment was that none of the OMITB or Reservation Dogs actors picked up an acting award. The Levys were awesome hosts and it was sweet to see Annie Murphy and Catherine O’Hara with them at the end.
After watching the Emmys, Tony's and Oscars l, think those shows are getting better. They figured out that the people who watch like movies, TV, theater and just lean into that and stop worrying about trying to be hipper. Also the the shows seem zippier now, finishing close to the three hour mark so that's nice
With one quip, the Levys burst The Bear’s balloon. Ironic that it took two Canadians to do it, but sometimes kindness can be subversive.

All teachers deserve a massive raise. Thank you for what you do.
Thanks! I didn’t watch the replay because I was trying to get to sleep at a decent hour to face the high schoolers today.
The lord (or whomever your higher power is!) bless and keep you, Roz. Thank you!!!
Preach it! I haven’t taught public school in 11 years and can now not imagine going back. I have subbed some, and it just shows me it has gotten even harder. Thanks for hanging in there!!
I should add I’m the school’s resident sub so I do so much weird stuff. And then I coach debate at an independent school and I love those kids.
There actually was a quick throwaway joke on 30 Rock, with Jenna Maroney and Miss Piggy in an US Weekly "who wore it best"!
I love that joke! Second only to Tracy’s “#4 Dad” mug!
Hah! Perfect. - J
I was going to say, Jenna would never agree to appear with Miss Piggy who would clearly outshine her.

I cried so much last night, I love to see people rewarded for good work. Greg Berlanti made me sob. Of course he makes superhero shows; he is one!
I had been hoping to see Ayo Edibiri on stage accepting, but I think about her story arc and I would guess next year is her best chance to win
My comment from last night stands. Can you freaking IMAGINE beating Meryl and Carol Burnett (and SLR) for your first ever win? And then her speech was so great.

Jon has turned out to be very disappointing in a lot of ways. -H
Yeah, I have not actually particularly enjoyed what I've seen of his return to the desk. He seems to still be using a 2003-2010 playbook for things that require some reassessment of his priors.
I agree that he seems kind of stale this time around. People fit different eras and his was clearly the 2000s.
Me last night "Dulce is right next to you Jon!!!"
So I just watched Greg Berlanti’s beautiful speech. To quote EHG (and TWoP)’s Sarah D Bunting: “DAMN YOU BERLANTI!!!” I shouldn’t be in tears already today.

I did not know that Saoirse was married to Jack Lowden, but good for her because HE is a snack.
I think they married quietly earlier this summer. Last year on Graham Norton, he talked about the holiday village he puts up in his house every Christmas and how involved it is. It was lowkey bothering me all night.
I am happy that the Bear didn't get Best Comedy, but sad that the winner was not Reservation Dogs. I knew it was very unlikely, but a girl can dream of a better world.

Their only option to compete for drama would be to make all the episodes a lot longer.

This was such a good recap! I've been in a work cave for the past couple of weeks, and this was a delight to get caught up with. Thank you both!!
