It’s the most wonderful time of the year! No, not Christmas (slow your roll). Not even Halloween. I speak of the return of Fansville, the long-running series of Dr. Pepper commercials which air primarily during college football season. Fansville is a fictional town full of extremely devoted aficionados of school just called “State,”1 and the ads are styled like a long-running soap opera with recurring characters — including Brian Bosworth as the town’s sheriff, and Colin The Coke Addict Who Dated Kelly Taylor on 90210. There is even the occasional season-long arc, like the time someone stole the team’s goalposts. College football starts in earnest this weekend, and let me tell you that I literally gasped with excitement when I bought a box of mini Dr. Peppers this weekend and realized a new season of Fansville is on the horizon. Not since Giles from Buffy and some lady flirted over cups of Taster’s Choice instant coffee have I been so invested in a serial commercial concept.
