Yes! I am here for the severance bundle - feel free to switch to recap! I won't spoil anything but I am loving the interviews with Ben Stiller/cast about how they pulled off S2Ep4 - the logistics are SO interesting and engaging. So much snow!
Shout out to everyone else who is unable to see the name Matlock and not immediately scream it Grandpa Simpson style.
I think Best Picture is between Anora, The Brutalist and Conclave. The loveable indie screwball versus the monumental drama versus the consensus pick everyone enjoyed. The weighted ballot system could seriously benefit Conclave. I'm rooting for The Substance for full chaos.
The Met Gala just feels soooooooo much like the Capital in Panem during the Hunger Games. It's hard to get excited about it any more. It gives me the ick.
I would be down for just so much black excellence as an eff you to some folks but I doubt we'll get that from most of the guests (and if they do it might make me rage for being appropriation.)
Just find some black designers and do some good tailoring and I'll maybe call it a win this year. Just maybe. (But also I'll be a little ragey about the whole vibe of the event right now. Just too much like let them eat cake.)
I wish someone with the power to change this would realize it and do more to promote the actual purpose of the Gala- funding the Costume Institute! It is at its heart a very necessary fundraising event that is also an excuse to get Very Fancy, and it feels like they should highlight that more.
I think if we knew more "regular" people who could get into it it would feel more accessible and less us vs them, but I also know that that part of the draw of the party is how exclusive it is.
One of the veterans groups I used to be super involved with used to invite veterans who had benefited from their services/policies they lobbied for to their annual gala as “table captains.” I think they realized a lot of the people at the sponsored tables had never met a veteran.
Something I appreciate about the Switzerland villa is that a lot of the interior shots have books in them. Fug Nation Headquarters is going to need lots of book space, I think.
That Congolese Sapeur article is bonkers - seems pretty tone deaf to pose people in bright expensive clothes like an Yves Saint Laurent suit, walking down a dirt road surrounded by extremely poor folks.
Sounds like the Glamour photo spreads I grew up on in the 1970s/80s - would think we would be past that now since even back then as a teenager I was like WHAT (said in the voice of Amber Says What?)
Chelsea can do so much better! I saw her opening monologue on YouTube and have watched a few episodes of her podcast, and she’s done a lot of work in the past 10 years or so to be a better person.
I wonder if she leaned on the raunchiness because that’s what most people know?
“Imagine that Sabalenka-Keys Aussie Open final if every point had that soundtrack underneath it.” I NEED IT NOWWW (Also shout out to Madison Keys for finally getting the big one! Been a fan for so long so it was so great to see her win her first —and hopefully not last—grand slam)
I've watched the first 2 episodes of Season 1 of Severance and.... I'm struggling. Usually I'm all in on this type of show (I loved The Curse, for instance) but I'm not getting into it. I love the cast, but it's just not grabbing my interest and feels flat. Please convince me it gets better and should keep going!
I'm in a similar place - I got through three episodes but have been tempted by the enthusiasm to pick it back up - so I'm curious to see if you end up liking it as you get farther along!
I am rewatching season 1 because I finally convinced my partner to start watching it, and I actually think episode 2 is the worst of the season. And the first time I watched, I found episode 1 more weird and vaguely interesting than good. For me, episode 3 was the turning point where things started to really get me interested, and then it builds from there. By the time I got to the finale I was 100% on board and loving it, and then the finale was truly insane in the best way.
Maybe this is an Unpopular Opinion but for the first time in ages, I'm excited for the Met Gala because of the theme. Anna had me at Colman Domingo. And that "honorary committee" is *chef's kiss* -- but Dapper Dan should really be a co-chair because ICON. Plus it just seems like a savvy, stylish FU to, well, everything happening right now.
re: swiss villas, i've realized, as i drive around los angeles and admire old, interesting apartment buildings (some surely built for actors or crew under the studio system a literal century ago, and SURELY full of excellent built-ins and gorgeous bathroom tile), my second thought (after "ooo that's a cool building!") is often like "oh see that's your richard ramirez door right there...great balcony! ...that's how the golden state killer gets in!" ...i DO think about how many exits there are, is my point, but that's because i'm a morbid weirdo.
I actually do this when I walk my dog. There are three homes in my pretty average suburb that have serious gates and bars on the windows and I think....why? Really, why? And I am so happy you are not my neighbor. I think I would have to move.
I just wanted to pop in and say that thanks to our Grammys chat, I have listened to Sabrina Carpenter and Please, Please, Please is my new favorite song. I have been singing it nonstop since Sunday afternoon when I first heard it.
Have you watched the music video? It's incredible.
It works even better when you realize that the Irish actor who actually is her on-again/off-again boyfriend is the guy in the video, and very likely the inspiration for the song.
Though I'll admit that I melt every time he holds her door, when she picks him up from jail.
You hit on one of my "Fall of the Roman Empire" questions. WHY do design houses just keep hiring/rotating the same designers?? Aren't there any kids graduating from design school? Sheer numbers would indicate that a talented someone is looking to move into the top position. Don't they have people who have worked up the internal ladder?
It just goes to show that the move to make EVERYTHING a money making operation has killed creativity (see also: films, television, Etsy).
They're risk adverse. Fashion is big business and they don't want to take a risk on a new designer. Meanwhile there are graduates of design schools doing interesting work on.a.shoestring that with some modest investment and some patience could develop and take over a big fashion house someday.

MAAAAATTTTLLOOOOOOCCCCKKKKK!!!
Every time!
I can’t say the word “bra” without remembering how Grandpa Simpson never wanted to hear it on TV again
I am not an Eagles fan at all but Jalen Hurts is a handsome, handsome man. Thank you, People, for giving us what we want.
I am always here for Trent and Atticus to get more hardware for banger OSTs. I still love the one for The Social Network.
The Met Gala just feels soooooooo much like the Capital in Panem during the Hunger Games. It's hard to get excited about it any more. It gives me the ick.
I swear I get more and more jaded everyday. I want to enjoy pretty fashion, I always have, but the excess just leaves me a little cold right now.
I would be down for just so much black excellence as an eff you to some folks but I doubt we'll get that from most of the guests (and if they do it might make me rage for being appropriation.)

And it does raise an INSANE amount of money. The gala raised $26 million for the Costume Institute last year! - J
I think if we knew more "regular" people who could get into it it would feel more accessible and less us vs them, but I also know that that part of the draw of the party is how exclusive it is.
How amazing would it be if they had lotteries for normal people tickets?
One of the veterans groups I used to be super involved with used to invite veterans who had benefited from their services/policies they lobbied for to their annual gala as “table captains.” I think they realized a lot of the people at the sponsored tables had never met a veteran.
The excess is icky. The Poors tuning in to gaze at the Riches is icky. Museums' history of pillaging is icky.
But also I do believe museums do important work. And it's fun to appreciate beautiful art (fashion).
So, I like it, but.
Something I appreciate about the Switzerland villa is that a lot of the interior shots have books in them. Fug Nation Headquarters is going to need lots of book space, I think.
Maybe we could splice in the library from Beauty and the Beast?
I went to a hotel recently and cackled at how many of the fancy black hardback books with gold lettering turned out to be... Nora Roberts. 😄

Binged severance and now sooooo excited for the bundle!! Also that Swiss villa is so beautiful.

@JRS - first two episodes were fine not great and I didn’t find them particular compelling, but it gets so so much better
Keep going! It gets so much better. I just finished a rewatch of Season 1 and the last few episodes are some of the best TV I've ever seen.
I started watching season 1 last month in anticipation of DWB recaps. I have 2 episodes left in season 1 and I'm obsessed.
OK, I trust the Broads :-) I'll keep going!
Keep going because the finale is GREAT, and if you really still don't like it by then, you won't! -H
I'm in a similar place - I got through three episodes but have been tempted by the enthusiasm to pick it back up - so I'm curious to see if you end up liking it as you get farther along!
I got through the first episode and it just didn't land with me.

Just switch to Somebody Somewhere. Only 3 seasons!
I do watch that and I love it, very underrated. I want to live in that town and be friends with all those people.

Every time I see Colman Domingo on the red carpet, it just just whets my appetite for the Met Gala. I cannot wait to see what he wears!
It has the possibility to be subversive in showing off black excellence but I also worry a bit. But who the hell knows.
I worry about the white people who think this is a reason to turn the bronzer up to 20.
That is equally problematic.
re: swiss villas, i've realized, as i drive around los angeles and admire old, interesting apartment buildings (some surely built for actors or crew under the studio system a literal century ago, and SURELY full of excellent built-ins and gorgeous bathroom tile), my second thought (after "ooo that's a cool building!") is often like "oh see that's your richard ramirez door right there...great balcony! ...that's how the golden state killer gets in!" ...i DO think about how many exits there are, is my point, but that's because i'm a morbid weirdo.
That reminds me of that meme: “You ever drive around and wonder how many people are locked in the basements of houses?” UM NO! BUT NOW I DO!!!
Jeez! Now that's all I'm thinking about!
I actually do this when I walk my dog. There are three homes in my pretty average suburb that have serious gates and bars on the windows and I think....why? Really, why? And I am so happy you are not my neighbor. I think I would have to move.
"That would be a much better line if I had ANY faith that Cheryl Hines actually has questioned her life choices."
Agree 100% - I've given up hoping she disagrees with her husband on 99% of things.
She knew who she married and I was very tired of all the profiles trying to whitewash her.

I’ll do that in a few minutes!! Thanks for the nudge.
That song gets trapped in my brain
It has been stuck there since Sunday!!!
And now there's a version with Dolly Parton!
I saw that on Lyz Lenz’s last post. You know Dolly wasn’t going to say motherfucker. 😂
😄
