Terrible news broke on Tuesday night: Actor Andre Braugher — best known for Homicide: Life on the Street (for which he deservedly won an Emmy) and, more recently, his brilliant turn as the deadpan Captain Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine (for which he deserved one) — died on Monday at the much-too-young age of 61, apparently following a short illness. This one really hurts.

Braugher first made an impression on me in one of his earliest roles, alongside Denzel Washington and Matthew Broderick in the Civil War film Glory (which I loved at the time, although I wonder how it’s held up), and while I was a sporadic viewer of Homicide, I did somehow manage to catch its arguably most famous episode when it aired and still think about Braugher’s performance in it conservatively once a month.
