The Bear Takes One Tiny Step Forward, and One Flashback

My husband hasn’t seen a single minute of The Bear season three yet, but when it came up in conversation in front of him on Thursday night, I realized that I couldn’t think of a single spoiler he was at risk of learning. We could talk about the plot in extensive detail and it wouldn’t tell him anything new. That’s where we are now. I am not saying I need six mic drops a minute, especially when The Bear does do smaller moments and interstitial humor pretty well. But I also find it increasingly self-indulgent that everyone is in the exact same place after six episodes out of ten. We have learned almost nothing new except that the Faks have another brother; even “restaurants are expensive and Carmy is a stubborn dickface” isn’t really fresh intel. In this batch of episodes, we take a small step forward in the operation of The Bear, and then we flash backward so that the producers can continue treading water, because — I can only surmise — they had no idea where they wanted to go this sea…
