The destruction in Southern California due to the wind-aided wildfires is mind-boggling. I almost cannot overstate how shocking, frightening, and fast-moving it has been. Whole neighborhoods are just… gone. Schools and businesses and residential buildings are ashes, because the winds meant firefighters couldn’t take to the skies for containment, and water ran low in hydrants. Heather and I are fortunate to be safe, though I am very close to the Eaton Fire — as of this typing, not in an evacuation zone — and it’s insanely smoky and has been very scary. But I know folks who’ve lost their houses and others who are waiting to hear, hoping they don’t catch a glimpse of their home aflame on the local news. On the other side of town, the Pacific Palisades are just demolished. Two fires, and more than 11,000 acres each — I think Pali is at least 15,000 now? — and they aren’t even the only ones burning.
