My family’s spring break trip to France — four years in the making, after being canceled in April 2020 — was a delight and a rousing success; I think my kids will remember it forever, which is exactly the outcome we wanted. I wish I had not underestimated their interest in gift shops, however. Granted, it was their first time in France, so we had to hit a lot of the major sights and accordingly I knew we weren’t going to come back with intel on a great off-the-beaten-path museum and its wacky wares. But now that I know the boys consider gift shops the crown jewel of any museum experience, I wish I’d built in time for at least one that was unusual.
I did make note of a few things from the various ones we perused, though, abetted by the fact that my children were armed with a mission — from their friends — to find the worst souvenir possible. And I do think we achieved that. It was NOT this:
