Awards Season Movies, Neon Museums, and GODZILLA!
A BIG issue with a little something for everyone today.
In anticipation of awards season, my household spent a lot of the holiday break watching the potential (or, in the case of the Globes, actual) nominees — mostly so that when I whipped myself up into the inevitable righteous tizzy about some result or other, it would be rooted in SOMETHING real1. I did not solely consume Oscar bait; while wrapping presents, I also popped on a Netflix film called Bank of Dave, starring Phoebe Dynevor and Hugh Bonneville, which is a semi-true gentle comedy — more gentle than comedy — about a dude who wants to start his own bank to help his townspeople, and the Greedy Fatcat Jerkwads (yep, the erstwhile Earl of Grantham) who thwart him. It was perfect half-eye viewing: good intentions, the nice people are nice and the bad people are baaaad, and completely unsurprising from start to finish… right up until the eleventh-hour appearance of Def Leppard.
