Today in Drinks With Broads, we’re hitting the road to the seaside town of Margate, England, for our next installment of Enter Through The Gift Shop, a newish feature here wherein I dig through the wares of the world’s museum gift shops and pick out the most interesting, entertaining, or delightful object(s) they are selling. This go ‘round, we’re visiting Crab Museum, a.k.a. “Europe’s only museum dedicated to the world of the decapod.”
Margate1 used to be – and presumably still is! – a popular place for folks looking to enjoy a little sea air on their holiday. It’s known for its famous old amusement park (which has closed and reopened multiple times since its beginnings in 1880, and undergone a variety of upheavals including two murders and a spot of arson), the Turner Contemporary Museum (which boasts a robust souvenir shop of its own), and this extremely fascinating shell grotto, which also has what looks like a truly excellent gift shop2.
