I had Stuff to Do yesterday morning so you can imagine my surprise and delight when I walked into the living room almost exactly as Team USA’s captain, Hilary Knight, scored a (beautiful) goal to tie Team Canada in women’s hockey — breaking the US women’s Olympics scoring record in the process1 — and was therefore home to watch (a) the American women beat the Canadian women in a thrilling overtime match, and, very shortly thereafter, (b) Alysa Liu skate the long program of her life2 to win the first gold medal the United States has taken home in women’s figure skating in 20 years. The vibes on the ice, as they say, were — FINALLY — immaculate, the polar opposite of the women’s final at the last Olympics which was, if you recall, A SHITSHOW. (However: Team Canada, I am sorry.
