The Naked Gun, the Poop Cruise, and the Latest Vogue

I was wrong! I was wrong! I love being wrong, except for all the times I hate it, which is almost always!!! But seriously, I covered the trailer for The Naked Gun when it dropped and I was DEEPLY suspicious of the movie’s quality. And I am delighted to report that, in fact, it’s a complete hoot.
The movie completely nails the spirit of a Zucker Brothers joint, from the overt silliness to audio-only jokes1 to the preponderance of sly visual jokes happening in the background of scenes. It’s a loving and effective entry in the genre by people who clearly understand and respect why it worked, and there are plenty of thematic callbacks to the original without being a full copycat. For example, the new Naked Gun pays homage to the first movie’s romantic montage, but with a great twist. Frank Drebin, Jr., is as good a driver as his father but it will make you giggle every time. And while the mind control plot is similar, they don’t even TRY to recreate Enrico Palazzo, the wisest choice of all.…
