Last night was the end of an era: After 54 years, or roughly one and a half Phantom of the Opera Broadway runs1, the Grammys will leave CBS in favor of ABC and its various channels and streamers. Consequently, host Trevor Noah -- also concluding his own six-year run -- seemed (mildly) more willing to skewer Trump and the network itself than he might have been in previous years; though Noah’s never been particularly sycophantic, he had a slightly sharper edge last night.2 The show itself was also considerably more political than, for example, last month’s Golden Globes -- not a high bar to clear, but still welcome. Both Bad Bunny -- whose Debí Tirar Más Fotos made history as the first Spanish-language album to win Album of the Year -- and Billie Eilish spoke directly about ICE, and several others like Olivia Dean proudly referenced their immigrant heritage.
