My 1980 Sears Spring/Summer catalog is a fascinating anthropological experience. First of all, as I noted when we looked at the Christmas catalog, you could get EVERYTHING at Sears back in the day. This catalog will sell you car insurance, baby clothes, window treatments, cowboy boots, bathing suits, a nurse’s uniform, an entire bedroom set, a washing machine, a bra and, of course, a treadmill, which this model DOES NOT seem to know how to use:
That is NOT how a person runs on a treadmill. Is this photo just letting you know what you’re going to look like in the middle of biting it in your home gym, right before you crack your chin on the handrail? I guess that’s useful. Anyway, every one of the catalog’s 1,571 pages is a time-traveling delight. We’ve reached the period in history where some of the women’s clothing is actually sort of cycling back. Sure, some of it is abjectly hideous, but some of it… you squint and it’s reasonable. Like, you know someone is gonna bring back terry clot…
