Usually, this show’s fate is announced around the time of its finale, but this year HBO brought down the hammer with two episodes to go: The morning after this one aired, Michael Patrick King released a statement saying he and SJP and HBO collectively decided during the writing process that this season is the last. It’s clearly a cover; SJP put herself in front of the firing squad a LOT more recently to try and counter the show’s bad publicity, which I doubt she’d have done if the end were already a fait accompli. Most likely, Michael Patrick King did what he always does and wrote a season-ender that could work as a farewell, and HBO gave them this much runway for ratings to improve and shitcanned it when they didn’t. For the sake of legacy and a long partnership — these people cost HBO a ton of money, but also MADE piles and piles of it — they’re letting all involved act like it was mutual and intentional, kind of like when celebrities consciously uncouple but you know one of them is…
